Random stuff: Picking up Greg Maddux is a good move for the Dodgers. No duh, right? He’s 42 years old, so it’s not as clear cut as it looks. However, with no other viable options available to step in for Brad Penny, he’s a low risk pick-up who should outperform Eric Stults, Jason Johnson, Tanyon Sturtze and the parade of retreads they had to choose from. Maddux has an ERA below 4 and a WHIP of 1.222 that may be a bit weighted by pitching in spacious Petco Field, but he’s still at least average and on a pace to pitch 200 innings. You’ll hear the “player-coach” angle played up over the next couple weeks, but Maddux prefers to hang out with other veterans, so his teaching will be done more by example than one-on-one instruction. When all is said and done, he should have a positive effect on the Dodgers from now until the end of the season, whenever that is.
